Methodology
Newsodd groups the same story as covered by many outlets and shows you, at a glance, from which part of the political spectrum it's being reported. Here we explain how we determine each outlet's bias and how each story's coverage bar is built.
Political bias
Bias is assigned at the outlet level, not the individual story. We use a 7-point scale based on the average of independent media-monitoring organizations: AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media for US outlets, and Media Bias/Fact Check for Argentine outlets. When only one or two of those organizations rated an outlet, we average whatever is available. Bias measures overall editorial stance (topic selection, framing, language), not the accuracy of any single story.
Reflects the most extreme left-wing positions. Strong bias in story selection and affiliation; often uses loaded or emotional language and may omit information that would hurt left-wing causes.
Aligned with the positions of left-wing party leaders. Moderate bias toward progressive causes through story selection or affiliation.
Slight to moderate progressive bias. Usually reports factually, but sometimes uses language that favors left-wing causes.
No discernible political stance. Uses little loaded language and stories are well-sourced, presenting a relatively complete picture. This doesn't mean it's 'the truth' or the most neutral outlet, just the absence of a marked lean.
Slight to moderate conservative bias. Usually reports factually, but sometimes uses language that favors right-wing causes.
Aligned with the positions of right-wing party leaders. Moderate bias toward conservative causes through story selection or affiliation.
Reflects the most extreme right-wing positions. Strong bias in story selection and affiliation; often uses loaded or emotional language and may omit information that would hurt right-wing causes.
Coverage
On every story we show a coverage bar: the share of outlets covering that event, grouped by their lean into left, center and right. It's a quick way to see whether a story is being covered evenly or whether one side of the spectrum dominates. Outlets without a rating from these organizations aren't included in the calculation.
Rating sources
Bias ratings come from AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media. The approach averages several independent organizations and shows coverage by political lean. Ratings are reviewed on an ongoing basis; if you think an outlet deserves a different rating, let us know.
